The two largest pharmacy chains in the United States will start dispensing the abortion pill mifepristone this month, a step that could make access easier for some patients. Officials at CVS and Walgreens said in interviews on Friday that they had received certification to dispense mifepristone under guidelines that the Food and Drug Administration issued last year. The chains plan to make the medication available in stores in a handful of states at first. Both chains said they would gradually expand to all other states where abortion was legal and where pharmacies were legally able to dispense abortion pills — about half of the states. Walgreens will start providing the pill within the next week in a small number of its pharmacies in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, California and Illinois, said Fraser Engerman, a spokesman for the chain.

Feb 1 (Reuters) - A group of 20 Republican state attorneys general on Wednesday told Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (WBA.O) and CVS Health Corp (CVS.N) that they risk running afoul of federal and state law if they dispense the abortion drug mifepristone by mail. Walgreens and CVS have said they intend to become certified and dispense the drug in states where abortion is legal, though neither has yet done so. Mifepristone, used in combination with another drug, misoprostol, is approved for abortion within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. The attorneys general called this interpretation "bizarre" and warned that mailing the drug could violate some states' laws. Meanwhile, generic mifepristone manufacturer GenBioPro and a doctor have challenged restrictions on the drug in West Virginia and North Carolina, respectively.

Jan 26 (Reuters) - Anti-abortion protesters broke into the room where Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (WBA.O) held its annual shareholders meeting in Newport Coast, California on Thursday for its decision to start selling abortion pills, the pharmacy chain said. "Today, directly after the close of official business of our annual shareholders meeting, a small group of protesters entered the meeting room without authorization," Walgreens Senior Director for External Relations Fraser Engerman told Reuters. "It was a wild annual shareholders meeting," said Walgreens shareholder and AGM attendee John Chevedden. "The protesters knew what they were doing because they found a way to enter the room from behind the podium. "Upon leaving the meeting there were about 50 noisy protesters with signs just outside of the resort grounds," he said via email.
Walgreens and CVS will sell the prescription abortion pill mifepristone after the Food and Drug Administration this week dropped a long-standing rule that prevented drug stores from doing so. The decision by the two largest drug store chains in the U.S. will significantly expand access to mifepristone in states where abortion is legal. The FDA on Tuesday changed its regulations to allow retail drug stores to dispense mifepristone so long as they complete a certification process. The agency dropped a long-standing rule that required patients to obtain the abortion pill in-person at clinics, hospitals and other certified health-care providers. CVS also plans to get certified in states where it is legal to do so, spokesperson Amy Thibault said.
A federal judge ruled Walgreens failed to investigate thousands of "suspicious orders" for opioids. "Walgreens pharmacies dispensed large volumes of medically illegitimate opioid prescriptions that were diverted for illicit use," the ruling states. Rates of opioid abuse and drug overdoses have grown significantly in San Francisco in recent years. In a 112-page opinion, US District Judge Charles Breyer wrote Walgreens "dispensed hundreds of thousands of red flag opioid prescriptions without performing adequate due diligence" adding that the prescriptions "were written by doctors with suspect prescribing patterns," according to court documents. The opioid epidemic has accelerated significantly in the city of San Francisco, with emergency-room visits tied to opioid abuse increasing threefold from 2015 to 2020, the court documents state.
